Urological Consultants of Florida

Prostate cancer surgery can be performed using many different techniques including removal of the cancerous prostate gland by way of open or da Vinci robotic assisted prostatectomy. Alternatively, prostate cancer surgery can be performed using ablative technologies to destroy prostate tissue without removing the prostate gland such as with cryosurgery (freezing the prostate), High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) and brachytherapy (prostate seeding). Our board certified Miami urologists at Urological Consultants of Florida are renowned experts in the field of prostate cancer surgery and offer our patients advanced treatments for prostate cancer using all of the above mentioned modalities of treatment.

Prostate cancer surgery to remove the cancerous prostate gland is the expertise of David Robbins, MD, director of the robotic surgical program at Urological Consultants of Florida. Miami urologist, Dr David Robbins received specialized training in robotic surgical prostatectomy as a resident at NYU Medical Center. Dr. Robbins is able to offer patients a minimally invasive option for prostatectomy using da Vinci robotic surgical assistance allowing for prostate cancer surgery to be performed through small keyhole incisions allowing the introduction of a 3 dimensional camera and miniature precise robotic surgical instruments. Robotic surgery provides the advantage of decreased pain, decreased blood loss, a shorter hospital stay and quicker return to normal activities. Additionally, robotic surgical outcomes for prostatectomy are considered by most to be superior to open surgery with respect to cancer cure, preservation of urinary continence and maintenance of erectile function.

Miami urologist Amery Wirtshafter, MD is a well respected international leader in the field of cryosurgery for the treatment of prostate cancer. Cryosurgery is a minimally invasive option for the treatment of prostate cancer performed in an outpatient setting. To perform cryosurgery for prostate cancer, Dr. Wirtshafter introduces several small needles (cryoprobes) into the patient's prostate by way of the skin between the scrotum and anus. The cryoprobes are visualized under ultrasound guidance and the prostate is treated with two freeze and thaw cycles using argon and helium gas. Typical operative times are less than one hour and patients are able to be discharged to home the day of the procedure with only a temporary foley catheter strapped to a leg bag. Dr. Wirtshafter leads regional training workshops for cryosurgery teaching many urologists in the United States, The Caribbean and South America the art of performing successful cryosurgery for prostate cancer. Dr. Wirtshafter is one of the worlds most experienced surgeons performing prostate cryosurgery.

Prostate cancer surgery can also be performed using a new technique called High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU). Although HIFU is currently not approved by the FDA for the treatment of prostate cancer in the United States, its popularity is gaining and it can be used for patients electing for an alternative approach for the treatment of prostate cancer. HIFU surgery is being performed in locations in the Bahamas and Puerto Rico.

Prostate cancer surgery should be performed by a surgeon with specialized training in the above mentioned advanced surgical techniques for the treatment of prostate cancer. Our Miami urologists Dr. David Robbins and Dr. Amery Wirtshafter are some of the most experienced urologists performing prostate cancer surgery in Florida. They additionally specialize in a diverse range of urological procedures and pathological entities including the treatment of kidney cancer, BPH surgery including Green Light Laser vaporization of the prostate, vasectomy, female voiding dysfunction and urinary incontinence, minimally invasive treatments for kidney stones, kidney cancer surgery, robotic pyeloplasty for UPJ obstruction, bladder cancer surgery penile implant/penile prosthesis surgery and more.
